Once again New Taipei City is on the wrong end of water safety. They have completely missed the point that human behavior and personal responsibility is what leads to accidents. Instead through a bizarre leap of logic they have decided that the river itself is at fault, and have used draconian measures to quarantine Lingjiao Waterfall. Those simply entering the water will face heavy fines of up to 50,000. All of people who lead kayaking tours through the river will now be unemployed. As fines for commercial activity can go up to 3 million. Ironically the law is called "the act for tourism development"
Many people visited Lingjiao Waterfall, and as a result some accidents have occurred. They happened in Lingjiao Waterfall because accident happen where people are, not because of any inherent danger. Linjiao is actually one of the safest waterfalls to swim in. The path has few dangers and the broad pool dissipates currents. with the exception of very high flow rate days, the only danger is depth. Now that it's closed, anywhere else people go to experience swimming and jumping will be more dangerous. No accidents have been prevented by this action. They've only been moved to another location.
For everyone who loved Lingjiao Waterfall and is looking for a similar place nearby, my recommendation is to go swim in Shifen Waterfall. That should have been the main swimming waterfall in Pingxi District to begin with, and they've already closed everywhere else.
